Sustainability in Information Technology (Green IT)

Indigo Solution goes Green. Why? First, a concern for the environment has always been a core value of its founder, Stuart Alter. And these days, there is just about universal emphasis on the environment, part of which is decreased energy consumption. A significant factor in that effort is the decrease in the energy usage and carbon footprint of Information Technology operations. Indigo Solution adheres to the greenest of standards and considers sustainable operations a responsibility, an integral part of any IT solution, and savvy business practice for reducing organizational costs and waste. Indigo Solution seeks to conduct business with partners that share similar values and tactics. Indigo Solution already has a long history of bringing environmental issues to the forefront of all information technology projects. Indigo Solution is positioned to be a pioneer in the advocacy, consultation, and practice of sustainability in the Information Technology industry.

I have been in the Information Technology industry for over a quarter of a century and I have seen the environmental impact of many IT shops and the industry as a whole. Sustainability, going green, reducing energy dependence, reducing waste and saving associated costs, are terms that have recently proliferated boardrooms, households, the media, and international government legislation on federal, state, regional, and local levels. I applaud the momentum in what I believe is a new way of life not a fad. I vow to incorporate these fundamental policies and strategies into the operations of Indigo Solution, and everywhere possible into the initiatives of its clients. - Stuart Alter

The Information Technology Greenprint

Its own Sustainability Greenprint is a strategy by which Indigo Solution designs and creates an information technology solution that considers environmental impact and strives to reduce energy usage. These green practices range from the simple and obvious to the more complex and obscure. The Greenprint will continue to expand as the Information Technology industry determines a growing number of sustainable practices.

There is a guidance of sustainable practices and opportunities, such as LEED certification in the construction industry. The Information Technology industry is in the process of drafting its own guidelines for green practices. Indigo Solution uses this evolving checklist for assessment of IT operations and projects.

Examples of Green Information Technology

Green Business Intelligence

By applying the concepts of business intelligence to green, sustainable information technology practices, an organization can truly understand its sustainability behaviors as well as that of its industry. Through the use of actual real-time data available where possible from the Utility companies, immediate assessment of green initiatives can be attained. A Green Business Intelligence application will provide for the measurement, assessment, impact analysis, and observation of actual and forecasted energy and cost reduction initiatives.

Philadelphia

The City of Philadelphia is positioned to be a very green city - in fact, ranked number 8 in the country by Sustain Lane. The Mayor of Philadelphia Michael Nutter concurs and created the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability in 2008. And in April 2009, Philadelphia announced its Greenworks Philadelphia initiative - a framework of environmental goals and strategies to achieve those goals by 2015. Implementing Green Information Technology strategies will help Philadelphia meet its aggressive goals.

The U.S. government also recognizes Philadelphia’s innate and deliberate sustainability potential and for that reason, held the first meeting of the Middle Class Task Force chaired by Vice President Joe Biden on February 27, 2009 in Philadelphia. The focus of the meeting was ‘Green Jobs: A Pathway to a Strong Middle Class’.

The Triple Bottom Line

The essence of a Triple Bottom Line - People, Planet, Profit - is paramount to the success of both business and of society. Indigo Solution subscribes to this philosophy and operates by the notion that the elevation of one elevates another. Indigo has demonstrated so with its projects by implementing business intelligence applications that have significantly impacted the success of the organization while at the same time reducing information technology operating costs and energy consumption. Reducing the impact of information technology operations will significantly contribute to the success of an organization's overall sustainability objectives. Indigo regards it a responsibility and an assumption to consider environmental issues in the assessment, design, and development of an information technology project.
